The Hessdalen Lights: Norway’s Valley Where Something Glows
Since the early 1980s, people in a remote Norwegian valley have reported floating balls of light. Scientists have measured them, but not explained them.
The lights appear above the Hessdalen valley in central Norway, sometimes hovering for more than an hour, sometimes darting across the sky. An automated monitoring station has recorded them since the late 1990s, and researchers have proposed explanations ranging from ionized dust to natural electrochemical reactions in the valley’s rock.
What makes Hessdalen unusual among unexplained phenomena is that it happens often enough to study. What keeps it mysterious is that nobody has closed the case.
