Do You Sleep Worse Around the Full Moon? Here’s What Researchers Found
A 2021 study tracked sleep across the lunar cycle in rural communities and a major city. The pattern held in both.
Researchers at the University of Washington followed members of Toba/Qom communities in Argentina and students in Seattle. In both groups, people tended to fall asleep later and sleep less in the days leading up to a full moon, a pattern published in Science Advances in 2021.
The effect was modest but consistent, even under city lights. One explanation is evolutionary: extra evening moonlight once meant extra usable hours. With the Hunter’s Moon on October 26, it’s a good week to protect your bedtime.
