About every 19 months, Venus seems to slow, stop and drift backward against the stars for roughly six weeks. Nothing about the planet changes. From our vantage point on a faster-moving Earth, it’s an optical effect, the same one you notice when a car you’re passing on the highway seems to slide backward.
